Wine Production and Bottling Facility
PEÑAFIEL VINEYARD (Valladolid, Spain) 2023

The competition centers on designing a wine production and bottling facility in Peñafiel (Valladolid). The project seeks to harmoniously balance the functional demands of a winery with the experiential aspects of wine tourism. A key emphasis is placed on the spatial organization, ensuring a seamless visual connection to the iconic Peñafiel Castle, particularly in areas intended for visitors and public interaction. The design approach prioritizes simplicity and efficiency, reflective of the industrial nature of winemaking processes. The scale of construction aligns with modest production targets, emphasizing quality over quantity. Rather than creating a large-scale industrial facility, the project incorporates a thoughtful layout with partially underground spaces. This design choice optimizes thermal performance while integrating the volumes with the surrounding landscape.

Geometry serves as the project’s conceptual axis, uniting semi-buried structures with above-ground elements that extend outward, creating a dynamic interplay between form and function. The ground floor is dedicated to production activities, while the upper level is reserved for wine enthusiasts. This elevated space offers panoramic views of the winemaking process and the surrounding landscape, combining comfort, luxury, and an appreciation of craftsmanship. Visitors approach the site along a path enveloped by vineyards, setting the stage for an immersive experience. The facility itself is subtly revealed, nestled among hillside clusters, poplars, and pines. Entry is via a gently sloping ramp, designed to evoke a sense of discovery and wonder.
